Turns out I might have picked the perfect year to stop doing my weekly TV podcast. My habits definitely changed, I watched a lot less TV, but I don't feel like I was missing a lot. And it meant I got to do more rewatches, and watch some shows that were new to me, like Homicide: Life on the Street, which I'm just now getting into the third season on. But this was the year we really felt the after-effects of the strike, too. I'll be curious to see what happens next year, but I don't have all the streaming services anymore, and I don't miss that.
Last year I watched 71 shows and had 17 that I didn't finish. This year I watched 43 shows and had 2 that I didn't finish.
It was also a light year for Marvel (which only had Agatha All Along, Echo, and What If?) and Star Wars (which had Acolyte, Tales of the Empire, and a few episodes of Skeleton Crew). My Best Of shows for last year that didn't return included Star Trek Strange New Worlds, Fargo, Poker Face, Last of Us, One Piece, Gen V, Blue Eye Samurai, and Monarch Legacy of Monsters, and I really want all of those back, especially Poker Face, One Piece, and Star Trek. Shows that ended last year were The Afterparty, Barry, and Julia, and I would have loved more seasons of all of them, although Barry at least got a great ending. Best of 2022 shows that didn't come back this year but are due back in 2025 are Peacemaker and Severance. I was looking forward to the return of Sandman, but Gaiman news has crashed a lot of that, unfortunately.
In the Top 20, 0 came from Disney+ (3 less than last year), 4 came from Netflix (1 more than last year), 4 from networks and Hulu (1 less than last year), 4 from Apple+ (3 more than last year, 1 from Prime (same as last year), 2 from Peacock (1 more than last year), 1 from Paramount+ (same as last year) and 3 from HBO Max (2 less than last year), and 1 from Starz.
Network Breakdown:
Apple+
Only three from Apple+ this year, less than half of last year. But I also dropped the subscription and hadn't watched a lot of it.
Disney+
Disney+ had 8 shows for me, the same amount as last year.
Max
Last year Max had 7 shows, the mark of Zaslav's sabotage. I dropped the subscription, this year I only watched 3, and I didn't finish one of them.
Hulu
Hulu and the networks definitely lost me this year. There were 14 last year, and 6 this year.
Netflix
Netflix had 9 shows, 5 less than last year.
Paramount+
Paramount+ had 5 shows, half of what I watched last year.
Peacock
Peacock had 2 shows, a drop of 7 from last year. One of those shows was Quantum Leap, which NBC canceled, and the other was Top Chef, which I can take or leave. It seems likely Peacock won't make the streaming cut for me in the future.
Prime
Prime had 5 shows this year, which is less than last year, but four of them made the top 20.
