My Saturday:
Got up late, since Katy decided at 2 a.m. that she felt like getting up and playing. And was not happy when first Suzanne, then me, then Suzanne again, then me again, told her she could not do this, and she needed to go back to sleep. Finally, poor Suzanne had to go in and lay down in the room with her so that she'd sleep. I finally drifted off around 3 a.m. when Suzanne came back to bed. So while I woke up every hour or so starting at around 8:00 (my usual routine), I actually got up at about 12:30.

Played with Katy, messed around on the computer a little, went to work at 2:30. Work was... well, kinda hellish, as it is every Saturday. Tons of kids coming in, most of them with no money intent on reading (and damaging) much of what's in the store, and some of the freakiest people that come into the store seem to come in on Saturday night. Seriously, I love my job most of the time, but Saturday nights I almost always leave in a near-homicidal mood.

But I decided to go ahead and head over to Nate's birthday party anyway, and I'm glad I did. I was hungry, since the last thing I'd eaten was lunch at 3:00 (new shrimp tacos from Taco Cabana, which I think are quite tasty), and I debated various places to stop. Finally, unable to decide and hungry, I grabbed a quarter pounder at the McDonald's drive-through. Now, I'm no defender of McDonald's as very good food, but when you're hungry, a quarter pounder can taste mighty good, and this one did.

Once I arrived at Nate's, I gave him the bottle of rum I bought for his birthday present, fixed myself a rum and coke with the excellent rum that he had saved for me. Then I watched, along with a few other folks (most I knew, a couple I didn't), April Fool's Day, which Nate terms his "favorite horror movie." I can only assume he's kidding. Or drunk. But it *was* fun to watch in a group setting. And starred Biff from Back to the Future, so there's that.

Now I'm home, continuing my quest to view all the Batgirl images from the Batgirl meme (and Good God, there's a lot of them), ripping music from CDs to iTunes and thinking I should go to bed soon. I'm sort of wishing I was in New York this weekend, as the NYC Con sounds like it's going to be pretty big, but I'm also sort of glad I'm not, as it sounds like it's having any number of first-time hiccups.

Tomorrow: Hut's. Buffalo Burger. For sure.

I Curse You, Nate Southard:
I have never even tasted a frickin' buffalo burger, and I haven't been to Huts in at least a year.

But now, thanks to your post, I have an immense craving for a buffalo burger from Huts. Call me tomorrow if you want to get lunch there before I go to work (at 3 P.M.). And once again, I curse you.

See you at your birthday party.

P.S. - To everyone who is not Nate Southard: Yes, I realize I could have just emailed this, but I want the cursing of buffalo burger craving inducement to spread far and wide.

P.P.S. - It is just possible that I should really go to sleep.

Weekly Comics to Come - March 1, 2006:

ALREADY READ:
Daughters Of The Dragon #2 (The child endangerment stuff is weirdly out-of-synch, but the rest of the book is a lot of fun, and Khary Randolph's artwork is fantastic for sexy style and action)
Essential Official Handbook o/t Marvel Universe Deluxe Ed Vol. 1 Tp (I miss the color a little, but these volumes collecting the best damn superhero encyclopedias ever are fantastic)
Exiles Vol 12 World Tour Book 1 Tp (Lots of fun... too bad Claremont is coming in to take over the book, Bedard and Pelletier have really hit their stride on this extended arc)
War Of The Worlds Second Wave #1 (An entirely setup issue, but it's promising setup... looking forward to more)
X-Factor #4 (Truthfully, I liked the '90s PAD incarnation of X-Factor better, but this is still a really good book, and far and away the best X-Book)

HAVEN'T READ:
Aquaman Sword Of Atlantis #40 (First six pages previewed online looked really good, and I'm delighted to see that despite being a new Aquaman, he's still named Arthur Curry. I can easily see this becoming one of my favorite books)
Ex Machina #18 (The delays have made me lose track of the story, but I still love this book every time I read it)
Fallen Angel #3 (Warming up to the new artist, although I'd be loving this book, instead of just liking it, if the original artists were onboard)
Fear Agent #3 (Again, delays aren't helping what needs to be a fast-paced popcorn action book, but still enjoyable with each issue)
Godland #8 (On time, and always enjoyable helpings of cosmic action)
Hack Slash Trailers (Nice art line-up on this one, and I love the story conceit of "trailers" for this mini-anthology issue)
Hellboy Makoma #2 (I'm sort of lukewarm on the Hellboy stuff of late, to be honest, although that's more because the BPRD series is so great that Hellboy pales by comparison)
Infinite Crisis #5 (Still reading it, still mostly not onboard, although I'm trying to get enthused about OYL and 52. I'm closer to feeling the vibe at DC than I am in the Bendis/Millar Marvel Universe, at any rate)
Jonah Hex #5 (Great single-issue stories, possibly my favorite new title)
Local #4 (OK, favorite new ongoing. Because Local is easily the best new book this year)
Marvel Zombies #4 (Guilty pleasure, I'm very interested to see Galactus versus a horde of zombie superheroes)
Northwest Passage #2 (Loved the first volume of this Canadian adventure graphic novel series, glad to see the second one)
Queen & Country Declassified Vol 2 #3 (With both volumes coming out so close together and having delays, I sort of lost the thread of both... but I'll definitely pick up trades of both, because I liked what I read)
Shadow Rock Tp (Wow, is this late. Looks like nice art, though)
Star Wars Empire #40 (Going out strong)
Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic 25 Cent Flipbook (Probably won't be too much story to speak of, but a nice cheap sampler for Dark Horse's underrated Star Wars line)
Ultimates 2 #10 (I have to admit, I'm very much looking forward to seeing how Millar/Hitch end this book. Also: LATE!!)
Y The Last Man #43 (So many balls in the air right now, with Ampersand, Beth, Yorick and company, dying to see what happens next)
Almost 12:30:
In eight hours, I have to get up, get ready and go to work. So what have I done with my night since arriving home at about 6:00, burgers from Dan's in hand?

Ate dinner. Played with Katy a little bit. Went out to STAPLE! meeting, which lasted about an hour. Came home planning to watch Scarface DVD rented from Netflix, or maybe update the iTunes music collection a little, do some reading, etc.

What did I actually do? I've spent the last four hours in front of the computer, messing with email, RSS feeds, MySpace... good lord, the Internet is addictive.

Middleman Comic - Free!:
Viper Comics has posted a free PDF of Middleman Issue One. I enjoy this book quite a bit, it's written by Javier Grillo-Marxuach (of Lost) and has nice black and white artwork from Les McClaine. If you like it, the first trade is only $10 and the new series has a 99 cent first issue, so it's cheap to get into.

Definitely worth a look.

Weekly Comics to Come - February 22, 2006:

ALREADY READ:
Solo #9 (Scott Hampton's issue isn't the strongest, but it's got a couple of really good stories and of course, great art throughout)
Zombie Tales Death Valley #2 (Kind of fun, zombie movie mixed with teen comedy)

HAVEN'T READ:
Astonishing X-Men #13 (Lost most of my interest in this one, but it's Whedon/Cassaday... I have to at least give it another chance)
Captain America #15 (Another one I've got no particular emotional investment in, but the craft is solid)
Exiles #77 (This, on the other hand, has been a fun ride through alternate worlds)
Green Lantern #9 (Chalk up another "no investment from me, but solid craft" read)
I Heart Marvel Outlaw Love (Most of these have been mediocre at best, but I hope for another one like the Beland/Walker story, which was great)
In The Blood #1 (I believe this is Steve Niles's werewolf book for Boom!)
Intimidators #3 (Still interested in seeing where this one is going)
Mouse Guard #1 (Gorgeous artwork, and the buzz on the writing is good)
Naoki Urasawas Monster Vol 1 (Finally! Now I can see if this tale of surgeons and serial killers lives up to the hype)
New Warriors Reality Check Tp (This was a fun series... wish Zeb Wells was getting higher profile assignments at Marvel)
Polly & The Pirates #4 (A blast, as much fun as Courtney Crumrin... Ted Naifeh is now on my must-read list)
Portent #1 (Art on this one looked terrific, curious about the fantasy-based story)
Put The Book Back On Shelf Belle & Sebastian Anthology Tp (Plenty of talent, should be enjoyable)
Robotika #2 (Really enjoyed the first issue, reminded me of early Grendel: War Child issues)
Spellgame #3 (Second issue made close to no sense, but the art is good, so I'm sticking in to see if the story comes around)
Spider-man Loves Mary Jane #3 (Fantastic, and of course, nobody is reading)
Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic #2 (First issue was a fun blend of pulp-y Star Wars and the videogame that inspired the book)
The Art Of Usagi Yojimbo Tp (Loved this one in hardcover... if you missed that, check this out)
Thing #4 (One of my top ten books of the moment... all She-Hulk fans should be reading it, at least)
Ultimate Wolverine Vs Hulk #2 (First issue left me underwhelmed, but I'm such a Damon Lindelof/Lost fan that I've got to keep checking it out)
Unruly A Comix & Literary Journal #1 (Indy anthology from Dork Storm Press)
Usagi Yojimbo #91 (More than likely, another solid outing of rabbit samurai adventure)

Lansdale and Truman on Conan:
This page on Tim Truman's art website has some of the pages, both black and white and color, of his upcoming Conan work with Joe R. Lansdale. And it looks amazing.

Arrested Development:
I "hear" that headline in Ron Howard's voice, and the little musical sting follows in my head soon after. Arrested Development is quite possibly my favorite comedy ever. It ended last night, and I watched it with friends and laughed and laughed and laughed.

Zack Smith has a long farewell to the show, and it pretty much sums up how I feel in a lot of ways, with just the right amount of bitterness toward the immense majority of people who never watched it.

Weekly Comics to Come - February 15, 2006:

ALREADY READ:
Daredevil #82 (Solid first issue. If the ending turns out to be a fakeout and Brubaker hasn't just wasted a really good, long-standing supporting character for shock value (see also X-Men Deadly Genesis and Banshee or Captain America and Bucky), I might be onboard)
Hack Slash Land Of Lost Toys #3 (Good solid last issue of this twisted humor/horror book, with great art by Dave Crosland)
Runaways #13 (Good solid issue spotlighting Molly, possibly my favorite character in the series)
Sentinel Squad One #2 (Fun, but I can't entirely get past the notion that putting this superhuman response unit into 30-foot robots doesn't make a lot of sense)
She-Hulk 2 #5 (Fantastic. Probably the best issue of volume two so far, with great humor and great use of Marvel's characters. Building on the past instead of ignoring or actively destroying it. Dan Slott is probably my favorite superhero writer at the moment)

HAVEN'T READ:
Alice In Wonderland #1 (Rod Espinosa does a comics version of Alice. Should be gorgeous, and probably pretty well written too)
Batman Year One Hundred #1 (Paul Pope on futuristic Batman. Can't wait.)
Birds Of Prey #91 (More of Gail's rock solid action and characterization, this is one of my few remaining DC Universe titles that I'm enjoying)
Conan #25 (Enjoying the final Busiek stories on this book, even as I look forward to Mignola and Truman)
Essential Moon Knight Vol 1 Tp (Hooray! Seems like I've been waiting forever for this. I read some of these from a friend's collection when they originally came out, but haven't read them since)
Goon #16 (Wow, this looks like a good week. Rare treats like The Goon and a lot of other good books)
Manhunter #19 (I've started really digging this book. It reads better in trades, but the flawed characters and darker look at vigilante justice is very interesting. I don't like the tone so much with established heroes, but with a new character, I'm OK with it.)
Noble Causes #17 (The continuing battle between the Nobles and their evil opposite family continues, and the series is better than ever as a result)
Planetary Brigade #1 (More of the Hero Squared universe from Giffen/DeMatteis)
Supermarket #1 (Brian Wood and Kristian Donaldsen, whose art was so impressive on Image's Forsaken... the short preview looked good, I'm very much looking forward to this)
Testament #3 (Still on the fence, but I can't deny that it's ambitious, and Liam Sharpe's artwork is *gorgeous*)
Transformers Beast Wars (IDW) #1 (I'm enjoying Transformers: Infiltration so much, I'm gonna give this one a read, despite having no idea at all about the Beast Wars setting)
Ultimate X-Men Vol 13 Magnetic North TP (Finishes off Brian Vaughan's run... lost track of the title around this time, so I'm looking forward to seeing how he wrapped things up)

Suckered In:
OK, I've got a Myspace profile now. I'm one of the crowd. There's not much up there yet, but I have enough friends on there that I decided it was about time.

Weekly Comics to Come - February 8, 2006:

ALREADY READ:
Jonah Hex #4 (Another solid western outing from Gray, Palmiotti and Ross... I keep hoping to see a trade collection solicited)

HAVEN'T READ:
Bomb Queen #1 (Jimmie Robinson's return to comics! Yay!)
DMZ #4 (That first arc ended a bit abruptly, but I'm still digging the general vibe)
Fables #46 (Kicking off a new story arc, which looks like a bit of a side trip)
Giant Killer TP (Classic giant-monster fightin' story from Dan Brereton)
I Heart Marvel Web Of Romance (Tom Beland and Cory Walker on a Spidey romance book, with Dragon Man yet... score!)
Incredible Hulk #92 (Begins the Planet Hulk story arc. I'm mildly interested, although the 14-part length is scaring me off)
Invincible #28 (Been a while since we've seen an issue of this... I'd rather this and Walking Dead were monthly, and Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Team-Up went months between issues)
Jeremiah Harm #1 (Sci-fi bad-assery from one of the creators of Lobo and publisher Boom! Studios... looks fun)
Marvel Zombies #3 (Guilty pleasure comic)
Middleman Vol 1 TP (Really enjoyed this adventure/humor book from Lost writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach)
Middleman Vol 2 #1 (And really looking forward to the second volume. But seriously... Super Skrull? The guy's talented, Marvel... why you wanna waste him like that?)
Showcase Presents House Of Mystery Vol 1 TP (Great artists on this volume, and after how much I loved Showcase Jonah Hex, been looking forward to another volume to read)
Star Wars Republic #83 (The conclusion of Quinlan Vos's story... will he live or die in the wake of Order 66?)
Star Wars The Comics Companion TP (A compilation exploring where all the comics fit in with the movies, etc. Should be good, Dark Horse does this kind of thing very well)
Transformers Infiltration #2 (Should be about time for more robot explodo)
Young Avengers #10 (The lateness and slow pacing should have killed my interest in this series by now, but it's just so well-written I have to forgive it everytime)
